BMW E60 - 5 Series

The BMW e60 5 series was introduced to the American market in 2004. From the bold exterior to the sophisticated interior, the style of the new 5 series is clearly inspired from the e65 bmw 7 series. The e39 dash is derived from the e65 7 series, featuring a center positioned control display which displays controls such as audio and navigation, and a second generation iDrive mounted directly behind the manual or automatic gearbox.

BMW (AFS) Active Front Steering:

One of the most interesting designs added to the new BMW 5 series is (AFS). AFS, or Active Front Steering, varies the ratio of steering at different speeds. Active Front Steering ratio range varies from 10-1 to 20-1. This variable steering ratio is not only factors into safety; you would really be able to notice AFS on the race track. This technology currently can only be found on the 5-series models.

The e60 5-Series New Wheelbase:

The BMW e60 5-series has a larger wheelbase and is longer than its e39 predecessor. Although the new 5’s interior and exterior is larger, the new BMW 5 has fine tuned its handling and increased its agility. The e60 platform sports all aluminum suspension and front end body components. Bmw's use of lightweight material reduces the overall weight of the car. This is important considering the BMW e60 5-series is significantly larger than the e39.

The BMW e60 SMG Gearbox:

The BMW e60 has also adopted new gearbox options. All of the e60 5-series engines can be outfitted with the Steptronic automatic gearbox, manual 6 speed gearbox, or the Formula 1 inspired (SMG) Sequential Manual Gearbox. The Sequential Gearbox, as seen in many exotic cars like Ferrari, is a Formula 1 style paddle shifting system mounted at the wheel. When driving with a BMW Sequential Manual Gearbox, your hands never have to leave the wheel to shift, and you don’t have to use a clutch. There are two modes for the BMW SMG; manual mode and automatic mode. With the 5-series SMG, you have the option of driving manual, or if you hit traffic, pop the (SMG) into automatic mode. Furthermore, Drivelogic is a feature of the BMW (SMG) which allows you to individually choose from 11 driving styles. Driving styles range from cruising to the store, to mashing around the track.
